Enabling VLM for production Instance

zaffer khan cisaMay 10 2009 — edited Mar 21 2010
Hi All,

We are to migrate our production instance on a new server, with more than 8GB of RAM. Currenty we are running our production instance on a server having 4GB RAM, with no VLM enabled. Our Production Instance in 9.2.0.8 on Windows 2000 Server Standard Edition.

The new server would be a Quad Core 32-bit server with around 8-12 GB RAM having O/S Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. I would like to enable the VLM feature onto the Server. From a couple of notes that I have found on google and on Metalink, it seems that I would have to enable /PAE and/or /3GB switch in boot.ini of the O/S.

I would also need to configure use_indirect_buffers and db_block_buffers. What I would like to know is:

1. How do you appropriately calculate the value for db_block_buffers?
2. If I were to migrate the instance to 10gR2 or 11gR1, would the above settings still be required or I can stick to the sga_target or memory_target parameters?
3. What are the situations/chances of having an "cannot allocate more memory" error after implementing VLM?
4. Is there anything else that I need to take care of in terms of Hardware, O/S or Oracle level configurations?

Regards,
Z.K.
