email notification of ZFS events

807745Oct 20 2008 — edited Oct 22 2008
Hi,

We've recently started using ZFS for our new fileserver, which is replacing a traditional RAID server. In spite of all the advantages of ZFS, I think one feature the administrator will not want to lose from hardware RAID is having email notification of important events like disk failure/fail-over. A RAID card can be configured to send these events, but when the RAID is implemented in software as in ZFS, what's the best approach to get something similar?
Unfortunately Googling for "ZFS email notification" tends to list every ZFS forum that supports email notification of new posts to the forum!
I'm assuming that the only way Solaris itself 'knows' about problems is via fmd, so does anyone have a neat way of getting the fault manager to filter for ZFS events and generate emails from them?
I can't help thinking there's a good case for having a standard built-in system utility e.g. "zpool notify" to do this, if there isn't something already.

tia,

Graham
