Dynamically removing asterisk from mandatory form fields

I would like to use dynamic action or javascript to remove the asterisk preceding the mandatory form fields to dynamically. Sometimes several items (not all) scattered thoughtout the form are mandatory or not depending on certain criteria. They items are not in a group per se.
Please assist.
