Dynamic Tabs

Hi
I have read little bit about creating a tab page navigation bar as a list rather than using APEX's standard Tab page functionality. I have managed achieve this by defining a list and displaying in a region. However, I want the list contents to be dynamic (retrieved via a SQL query), rather then statically defined at design time. I am sure this can be done but am struggling with the approach to take. Can anyone give me basic pointers on how to do this?
