Dynamic Branching

Hello,
I have a page that is used for uploading docuements that I want to call from different pages.
I have a "Back" button the page that is to use a hidden item on the page called P16_PREV_PAGE that is populated from the calling page. I can see from the Session link on the dev bar that this field is indeed populated with the page number from the calling page.
I created a branch that has the Target Type set to "Page in this Application" and Page set to &P16_PREV_PAGE. (with the period)
When I click the "Back" button I'm getting an error:
Contact your application administrator.
Error ERR-1016 Application "129" Page "0" not found (requested language="en-us")
OK
The page number being passed is 15 as can be seen in Session.
I've used this technique in version 2.0 and it worked perfectly.
Why is it trying to branch to page 0?
What can I do to get back to the calling page?
Is there any more information that I can provide to solve this?
