Duration of column rename

Hello,

I'm renaming some columns in an database production environment. The involved tables contain data, ranging from 200.000 to 1.500.000 records. The renaming process takes much more time (>45 minutes per column) than the rename in the development and testdatabases (approx. 5 minutes). The columns are part of the primary key. Anyone any idea what's happening during a rename? All databases are 10g.
