DS 5.2 install - unable to startconsole after DS and AS configure

I'm configuring a Solaris 9 system with the latest download of DS 5.2.

I had 5.1 running smoothly, stopped the daemons, uninstalled, then removed the packages. I made sure to remove the /var/iplanet directories and directory startup scripts. Then I installed the 5.2 packages as detailed in the Install and Tuning Guide.

Running directoryserver configure completes with an error about not being able to read slapd.inf, but I'm still able to start the DS and restarts complete ok. mpsadmserver configure completes successfully, and even idsconfig completes succesfully.

When I run ./startconsole from /var/mps/serverroot, the login pops up. If I type in the correct login (admin) and admin password, it just brings me back to a login. If I deliberately type the incorrect password, it tells me I've done so. What's happening?
