Dropping primary key, doesn't drop associated index in 10G

668822Feb 5 2009 — edited Feb 13 2009
hi masters,

we are using oracle 10g on Linux platform. sometimes back we dropped a primary key on say table 'x'. but after that we find that the index associated with that means, unique and not null index which are created implicitly ,are still there after dropping associated primary key.

while we were using 9i some times back, and didn't face this issue ever. we were able to drop primary key with all its associated indexes. with command:

alter table x drop constraint_pk;

i think i am clear, why this is happen??? is it a bug in 10g, actually sometimes it does drop index associated with primary key and sometimes not. why is it so???

i red an article on ask tom

http://asktom.oracle.com/pls/asktom/f?p=100:11:0::::P11_QUESTION_ID:1232036500184

it says that dropping primary will still drop implicitly created index, but it's not happening in my case. i have to drop them manually.

what might be the issue???

thanks and regards
VD
