Hello,
I'm using Virtualbox version 5.1 under Windows 10 Professional 64-bit. For hobby purposes, I want to construct a DOS VM that includes networking for old time sake.
I found this under the wiki site: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Sharing_files_with_DOS <-- (Set up a DOS VM with networking (and shared folders).)
There is no authorship or date indicated on this. The links to the Microsoft ftp site no longer work...I guess Microsoft took down the FTP server in September 2015.
(However, I just found this mirror which will certainly prove useful for a while at least: http://www.mmnt.net/db/0/0/ftp.microsoft.com.)
I wanted to point out this link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/128800 --> (How to Provide Additional NDIS2 Drivers for Network Client 3.0) ... did not prove of any use, as there seemed to be nothing to do.
It seemed to pertain mostly for Windows NT Server, but there is a mention of a later version of Microsoft Network Client (3.1) that may be what the author was using.
The links to four of the needed packages go to the now defunct Microsoft ftp site. There is no way to know if the ones I found were the most current.
Bottom line is that the instructions were very difficult to follow, especially when it came time to share the VM because the NET command in the version of Microsoft Network Client 3.0 that I was able to find didn't include a 'SHARE' sub-command.
I'm not that far from getting this working, but the instructions need to be redone. There is still a business use for a DOS VM these days but it was incredibly difficult to find clear instructions that could not expire because of dead links to Microsoft.
If I can ever get this working, I would like to follow up this post with much clearer and sure-fire instructions that are virtually guaranteed to work.
Thanks,
