SQL & PL/SQL

Hi guys,
I am looking for dynamic SQL and I found like this in some variables:
.... WHERE
empid = LN$Id
or :
LC$total ....

can some one explain to me what the ( $ )dollar sign do in variable and do you have some examples and what the purpose of using it.
