Does RMAN locks tables while it backs up

Version: 10.2.0.3.0

Hi: my DBA has setup RMAN to backup data. One of the applications I am working experiences timeouts for queries while this backup takes place. I am guessing this is happening b'cos RMAN locks the tables. Is this normal? Is there anyway around this?
