Does Oracle Health FHIR API Support Real-Time Event Subscriptions for Lab Results?

Shema ChristopheFeb 22 2025 — edited Feb 27 2025

Workflow or API calls:

We are integrating with Oracle Health’s Millennium FHIR APIs and need to retrieve lab result updates in real-time for AI-driven clinical decision support. Specifically, we are working with the Observation API (Millennium FHIR Observation API).

Background Information:

Failure to provide answers will impact our ability to respond in a timely and effective manner
Developer questions:

Are you an OPN Member? No
Have you signed up to be in the Healthcare Developer Track? No
Are you a registered Code Program member? No
Does your App have a presence on the Oracle Healthcare App Marketplace? No

Are you developing on behalf of an Oracle Health client? No
If so, which client:

Application's Client ID and App ID, if relevant:

Not applicable at this stage; we are evaluating API capabilities in the public documentation before determining if enrollment in the Oracle Partner Network is necessary.

Expected Result:

We are trying to determine whether Oracle’s FHIR APIs support real-time event subscriptions using the FHIR Subscription resource, as defined by the HL7 FHIR standard:
🔗 HL7 FHIR Subscription Standard

Our goal is to listen for new or updated lab results (Observation resources) and process them via AI in real-time.

Actual Result:

We were unable to find documentation in the Oracle Millennium FHIR API that explicitly mentions support for real-time FHIR Subscriptions. If real-time eventing is not supported via FHIR, what is Oracle’s recommended approach for real-time lab monitoring without excessive polling?

  • Are there alternative event-driven mechanisms (e.g., webhooks, proprietary APIs) for receiving notifications when lab results are updated?
  • Is real-time eventing available only through proprietary Oracle Health APIs rather than FHIR?

X-Request-Id / Cerner-Correlation-Id / opc-request-id:

N/A – This is a general API functionality inquiry, not an error report.
