Does AWT on Linux require X windows?

843807Sep 12 2003 — edited Jun 29 2008
I am a Java developer who has, up until this point, only developed on the wintel platform. I would like to start developing on Linux, but would like to stay away from X windows. My installs of Linux thus far have been very smoothe apart from X windows, which I find slow, bloated and difficult to configure.

However, I don't want to spark a philosophical discussion on X, I just want to know if I can utilize the graphical components of Java like the AWT on the Linux platform without installing and configuring X?
