Do you really need OLAP?

551513Sep 16 2007 — edited Oct 5 2007
Recently, I really confused of OLAP. Since computer hardware performance become higher and higher and sql analytical function was appeared in database, do we really really need OLAP?

I had tested oracle OLAP tools before, I found the performance of Oracle OLAP is not obviously improved. If we use partition database and materialized view in traditional Oracle database, we could get higher performance compare to OLAP. Maybe I am not familiar with Oracle OLAP features now, but it is really not easy to grasp all knowledge of OLAP conceptions. No standard in OLAP area compare to traditional database. Is it really useful?

To be honest, using SQL can do more than 80% function of analysis system. We can do most of aggregation and prediction works by traditional database now. Why we must use OLAP? I am really confused of it now.
