Do we need bidirectional ports only in EPM?

I always requested clients to open bidirectional port between the Web Zone and Database Zone without giving much thought since I had seen it that way at Oracle. Now the client claims that I should be fine with only single direction port opened that is from Web to Database since he says that is how it works in EBS environment. I don't get his logic.

Someone please tell me how it is done at your end and is it mandatory to have bidirectional port and why?
