Displaying XMLTYPE data stoed in AL32UTF8 db character set

Hi,
Using Sql Developer 1.5.1 with JDK 1.6.0_06.

1) Is there a proper way to display the contents of an xmltype column?
After I run a query and double click in the results area the contents become:
<tsxm:ul tsxm:list-style="none">. Then when I put the mouse over this, the contents appear in a blue background kind of box that constantly appears and disappears!

2) The data contains some mathematical formulae, but this does not display properly. I assume that this is something either to do with the client encoding or the font used to display, or both. Is there a way to set the tool up so that it will show the full range of characters allowed by AL32UTF8?
