Display Errors from Stored Procedures

If I call my own stored procedure(s) (on submit after...), what is the best way to deal with exceptions and user defined exceptions. I can put in htp.p calls but the output is never displayed and you want the output in a certain region instead of somewhere on the top of the screen.
