Disk/Partition/Slice information

807559Sep 11 2006 — edited Sep 22 2006
Hi, I am quite blur with disk. My question are:

Q1) in /dev/dsk/
There are a lot of the following slice.

c0t0d0s0 - c0t0d0s7
c0t1d0s0 - c0t1d0s7
c0t2d0s0 - c0t2d0s7
c0d0t0s0 - c0d0t0s7
c0d1t0s0 - c0d1t0s7

But i really dun understand each slice is used for wat purpose, and which slice is for CD-ROM. Can Help me?

Q2):
When I add a new hardisk. i create /reconfigure and reboot. and then #devfsadm.

As i know that at this moment, i still cant mount the slice (for example: mount -F UFS /dev/dsk/c0d1t0s0 /patch)

What should I do in order to use these slices (mount)? must fdisk it? must partition? Can giv me detail step?

Q3) what is the difference between slice and partition?

Thanks

regards
Raymond
