Discoverer Viewer and a blank screen

Discoverer Viewer was working fine until I tried to modify some preferences in the viewer_config.xml (<look>) and style.xsl (text color, logo) files. When these changes did not work, I restored the original files (I made copies of the originals before making modifications). Now opening Discoverer Viewer is giving me a blank screen.

The "JSERV.log" file contains the following error, "XSL-1021: Error parsing external document: 'Start of root element expected."

All services are running and in fact have been restarted.

Any ideas on where to look?
