Discoverer Desktop "failed to update the system registry"

When opening Discoverer Desktop (version 10.1.2 / client 10.1.2.45.46c) , I initially get a pop up that says "Failed to update the system registry. Please try using REGEDIT." Pressing the OK button allows me to log in, but the app doesn't appear to act normally to me as I can then not open any additional reports without closing and reopening Desktop again. I get the "failed to update the system registry" pop up every time it's opened.

The person that installed Discoverer Desktop (IT with admin rights) doesn't have an idea of why some machines get this error, while others don't and operate with minimal headaches.

I'd appreciate any advice that I can pass along to our IT folks to help fix this annoyance.
