Discoverer desktop crashing with error in mfc42.dll

I opened up a case with Oracle tech support to try to fix the issue where my Discoverer desktop is crashing with an error in mfc42.dll. It started happening randomly without any other major changes to my operating system (that I can recall). I'm running Windows XP 32bit. They suggested several solutions which I tried

1) copying the mfc42.dll file from another system with a working version of Discoveer desktop and copying it to my Windows system folder
2) Completely uninstalling and reinstalling Discoverer desktop

At this point, oracle tech support is suggesting I reformat by PC. Before I do that, I'm hoping if there are other suggestions I can follow to fix this as it will be a huge hassle to reformat my PC.

I'm running a fresh install of Discoverer desktop ver 10.1.2.0.0
