Disable unique index?

Hi ALL,

11gR2

I want to disable unique index in our table so I can duplicate some records then change the unique column to a unique value.

I tried:

alter index loans2_x1 disable;

ORA-02243: invalid ALTER INDEX or ALTER MATERIALIZED VIEW option

What is the right command please...
