Difference between Retiring and Shutting down SOA Composites

SOADreamsSep 21 2011 — edited Sep 21 2011
All,

There are 2 options in enterprise manager. One is to shutdown the composite and the other is to Retire the composite.

When we shutdown a composite and try to generate an instance of it, BPEL engine returns "Composite state is turned off". On the other hand when we Retire a composite and try to generate and instance of it, BPEL engine returns "Composite is retired and new instances cannot be generated".

A Composite can be "Activated" again from the retired state and it can be "Started Up" again from the Shutdown state. In both these cases the SOA composite starts working normally again.

So the question here is, "What exactly is the difference between Retiring and Shutting down an SOA composite?". When should we retire a composite and when should we shutdown?

I will really appreciate your help.

Thanks much.
