Difference between Node VIP and SCAN VIP

JimboDec 16 2013 — edited Jan 9 2014

hi,

I am a bit confused about the difference between a node VIP and a SCAN VIP ?

My understanding for RAC is -

  • Each node gets a public ip ( for general access eg by the DBA / Administrator etc )
  • Each node gets a private ip ( on Interconnect for node to node communication )
  • Each node gets a virtual ip - not sure about this ( i.e. the purpose ) ?

  • Each Cluster gets a SCAN name - which resolves to 3 virtual IP's. Each virtual IP gets a SCAN Listener created on each node i.e. each node has 3 SCAN Listeners running on it, which can point a connection to any of the instances ( either on the local node or another node )

any clarity greatly appreciated

Jim
