Difference between Mount and Open the database

Dear Friends,

I request you to please clarify what is the difference between Mounting the data base and Opening the database.

I would also like to know

what is the purpose of mounting the database and then use it?
What are all the process initiated on mounting the database?
what are all the process initiated on opening the database?
