Difference between /etc/auto.direct and /etc/auto_direct

Hello,

Can anyone let me know difference between /etc/auto.direct Vs /etc/auto_direct two automounter files.
Especially in which solaris versions they are used. On googling I find out /etc/auto_direct is used in Solaris 2.x versions
and /etc/auto.direct is used upto SUN OS 4.x . Is it true.
Brief background on change of names is more appreciated.
