Difference between Associations and view links?

When should we create association between entity objects or view links between view objects?
What is the exact difference?
To put the question in the right way,
If we have 2 EO's based on the two tables & 2 VO's based on these EO's, I could just create view link between 2 VO's without creating any associations between EO's.
Then, what is the need for Association?
