df -h on /var showing incorrect size

FlakeFeb 3 2010 — edited Feb 8 2010
Hi all,

Our /var was having a HP agent file called hpima in /var/log/hp directory which was consuming 7.5 GB in size. The total size of /var is 11 GB and usage was 96%. Other directories/files are really small in size. Once the hpima file was removed to free up space, the /var still shows the same 96% usage when df -h command was invoked. When du -h was executed, it shows the size to directories which are only in few megabytes, the max being 113 MB and no hpima file is shown. Why is df command showing 96% usage when the usage is really small? Is there any way for df -h to show the right size? Will restarting the machine solve the purpose? Seeking your invaluable help.

OS : Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 7) for Intel Itanium (64 bit)
Kernel : 2.6.9-42.0.8.EL
Hardware : HP RX 6600

Thanks,
