Developing a Database Application using Java Client and Web Services?

Hi All,

I am new to the world of Web Services and Java to some extent. We have a requirement to develop an extension to our Application that will run on a PDA. I would like to develop this in Java, but there are no production JDBC Drivers available at the moment (see JSR-169).

As an alternative, could I develop a Java Application (or Applet) and some Web Services to run on my Application Server and have my Java App talk to my database through Web Services? Am I on a possible winner here?

All feedback welcome!!

We are using HP iPaq 4700 connecting to Oracle Application Server + Oracle Database on Linux.
