DBW0 running for 10 hours, creating a lot of archive files

Yesterday our production db has stopped. According to event log - db instance had been terminated abnormally. event #7031.
We restarted the database and were back in business. Now, our db runs in archiving mode. Since we re-started db yesterday, the archive files started to create very frequently. (more often than normally). I have noticed the DBW0 runs a lot of processes and has a lot of locks on sys tables.
Is it a normal behavior?
