dbstart command not working when i try the make instance up!!!

i m rookie for oracle installing!!!!!! İ m installing oracle 10g to my x86 64 RHEL server.i build the oracle and created a new database instance.i cant startup the ınstance when i m on the oracle user with dbstart command.İ m changing to SQLPLUS and i can rise the instance to up.What am i doing wrong when i try to make instance up on the oracle user??? what should i do for fix the problem.waiting an help from experts!!!
