Dba vs rest of IT team

I had a question from long time that how many DBAs really needed to accomplish 100~500 gb database or few databases. I found in companies where 3 to 4 network administrators and 2 to 3 unix administrator and 1 DBA and 1 Application DBA who design the application.

Please share opinions.
