dba_tables versus dba_tab_statistics

Hello,

I'm trying to find out what kind of information are in two columns of dba_tables and dba_tab_statistics tables: last_analyzed, num_rows and how they are populated.
I thought that after running optimizer autotask (I am on 11.1 database) these columns will be populated with the same values but they are not. Is it normal behaviour and if yes- why?
