__db.XXX and log.XXX files

Hi,
what is the use of those files?
After having stored an XML file with ./dbxml (for instance), may I delete them?
The container is big (because my XML file was big) but they are very big too! (almost 1/10 for each of them)
Is there a way to have/make them smaller?
