date picker with redirect

Any thoughts on how to program a date picker item to utilize the redirect functionality in apex?

Version is 3.2.

Just the quick background, I have many select lists with redirect working in concert in a simple form.
I need to replicate this redirect functionality with a date picker item, not just a select list.

Glanced through the available javascript api's thought that would hold the solution, but not exactly to my liking.
I am thinking I could also brute force something custom in js as well, but don't want to reinvent the wheel if not needed.

Anyone else have a solution?
