datapump performance question: network_link vs exp/imp on same node

340688Dec 14 2007 — edited Dec 14 2007
We are converting the characterset for a 430gb database and obviously want to do it as fast as possible. We are going from 10.2.0.2 WE8ISO8859P1 to 10.2.0.3 AL32UTF8. I have read a few documents about the various expdp and impdp parameters and am in the middle of testing right now.

Theoretically, would it be faster to use a network_link if both the source and target are on the same node? The documentation I have read so far suggests that network_link is slower if going over the wire, but there are no definitive words for same-host migrations. It seems that network_link would be faster than export to a file and then import from the dumpfile. Just curious what practical wisdom says.

According to the online documentation, we plan to tune the memory pools as well (in addition to several suggested parameters), but right now we are CPU-bound so at the database level it is a little difficult.
