database not mounted

Dear all,
i am using oracle 10g, operating system is windows xp. I have given a command to recover database but receive the following error. anybody could help me to solve this problem that how could i mount the database. so that i would be able to recover my database. i have given the following command.

SQL> recover database using backup controlfile until cancel
ORA-01507: database not mounted
