Database not able : ORA-01261: Parameter db_recovery_file_dest destination

Hi,
I have a ASM-managed DB instance.
I mistakenly configured the "DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST" param on the spfile to "+ASM/dir" and it was not supposed to be like this....hindsight is 20/20.

Now when trying to start DB.
I get:
ORA-01261: Parameter db_recovery_file_dest destination string cannot be translated
*********

I tried using strings editor ( I know not suppoprted)...but didnt do any good..

any ideas?
The DB will not even start on nomount...
