Data Grid - doing a 'Select for update'? If so, how to stop that?

I'm having problems with SQL Developer causing locking issues because it seems that when a developer is querying data using the Data grid window it's locking all those records for update.

Is this true?

Is there a way to change this, so the records are not selected for update?

We're at Sql Developer 1.1.2.25 (Build MAIN-25.79) running on Windows XP and the database is Oracle 10g release 2
(we've recently upgraded from Oracle 10g release 1 ... i don't remember having this issue before)
