Data File Size?

How is the best way to determine the optimum size for your dbf's.
We started out with a 2GB data and a 2GB index file.
Over the past 4 years, in the heat of "Getting the system back up"
we have added 3 data and 4 index files, averaging about 1.5 GB each. Why do they vary? , beacause of different DBA's and the heat was on...
We currently have datafiles in the three file systems, U01, U02 and U03 totaling about 18 GB of data.
Any advice would be appreciated.
