DA to validate text box, show warning and stop execution when validation fails

Hi, I;m using Apex 4.2.

I have a DA that inserts into table, fires on text item change. I need to add validation of text item, show warning message and stop DA execution (insert) if validation failed.

Can you please tell me how to do this - do I need Javascript or can I achieve it with PLSQL?
