Custom folder

I have created a custom folder and when I access this folder to create a workbook, I cannot choose any other folders as all get dimmed or disabled. Can someone say why this happens.
Also I am not able to see the other database folders that I see when I login in Administartor. In Discovere desktop I only see the custojm folders and a few other irrelevant folders, how can I see some of the other database folders, please advise
