CSS styling of individual Checkboxes in a Checkbox TreeView

I was reading this old thread regarding the styling of checkboxes:

I would like to be able to color the background of certain checkboxes in a very large Checkbox TreeView that uses a cell factory for its display.

Does anyone have an obvious route to doing this in such a way that performance would not be significantly degraded? Any help or ideas will be gratefully received :)
