Crystal Reports and Java?

For the office, we need a small tool, that combines data from a excel sheet and from a database. As a result, I would like to display a Crystal Reports.
Not quite sure how I want it though. Maybe something like an internal viewer, so I don't have to actually start CR but only my Java tool.
We still have CR ver 8.5. In newer versions, this should be possible, so I read. Is that correct??
..and:
- How difficult is the API?
- Does anyone know a good spot / book / site to start?
- Any experience?
