Credit Card Processing...how did they do that?

Good Morning everyone,
I'm currently working on an idea for a website. I use Tomcat server 4.0, mysql, Java, JSP, Html, and Servlets. I was curious about credit card processing. I've never actually attempted it, but would like to know how its done.

Does this involve contacting the credit card companies? What elements are required to achieve this? I don't know CGI...only the languages I've mentioned above.

Any input is appreciated:)
