Creating Self-Signed Certificate
807567Jul 7 2010 — edited Jul 12 2010I'm trying to generate a self-signed SSL Certificate for a development instance of Sun Web Server 6.1. When I google for tutorials on this process, I find that there is a large variety of tools for creating self-signed certificates: certutil, keytool, openSSL, etc... I'm not really sure which one works best with Sun Web Server and I've been having trouble creating a self-signed certificate.
My server configuration is a little weird since my application makes https requests back to its hostname (ex:myServer.myCompany.com) in addition to requests to localhost and it has an alias (myServerBackup.myCompany.com). How can I make sure that the SSL certificate will work for both the hostname, localhost, and the alias? Do I need 3 SSL certificates for the different domains?
I tried following the tutorial located at:
www.seedsofgenius.com/pdf/wp6.pdf
That tutorial used openssl to produce an SSL certificate. Following their instructions, I created an SSL certificate for localhost. However, I'm not sure how to produce one for the hostname and the alias. Do I repeat all of the steps to make additional certificates? I think that I need to omit creating a new Certificate Authority.
Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!
