Does anyone have any idea how to create a splash screen a la windows application (Google Earth etc)

The first page of my apex app takes a couple of seconds to load, basically, I wanted to create a brief splash screen to take their mind away from it.
I also want to put a nice graphic in there.
This would be another way I can let them know if it's the live or test environment they are looking at also.
