Creating a Password File

I am a veteran user of Oracle, but when it comes to installation and Unix machines I'm a novice, so I am asking for your help on setting up a password file. I ran orapwd as such:
$orapwd file=u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.7/dbs/orapwtest password=change_on_install

I keep getting an OPW-00001: Unable to open password-file error.
