CPU usage for the current call

I am under the assumption that if you subtract the 'CPU used when call started' from the 'CPU used by this session' (v$sesstat values), you'd get the CPU chewed up so far by the current statement. However, what I'm reading on the two stats is consistently vague and confusing. Can someone verify my assumption or explain why I'm wrong??
