Count Up Timer

I am trying to create a program that counts up seconds from a particular date, i have tried

seconds = 9876000;

and then count up from there but then it resets seconds when I run the program again, i want it to keep counting up... help?!

the date i am trying to count up from is Sept 1st 1978 and 5:19.
